What It Measures and Why It Matters
Illumea Neuro utilizes quantitative electroencephalography brain mapping, or QEEG as a noninvasive way to measure patterns of brain activity in real time. The brain’s neurons are constantly communicating through tiny electrical impulses. When groups of neurons fire together in rhythmic patterns, those signals become detectable at the scalp’s surface. QEEG captures this activity using small sensors placed at standardized points on the head, recording the electrical changes with millisecond-level precision.
Reading the Signal
Before analysis occurs, the raw data is carefully processed, filtering out interference from things like eye movement, muscle tension, and environmental noise. The remaining signal is organized into frequency bands, predominantly consisting of delta, theta, alpha, beta, and occasionally gamma waves. Delta is a pattern of sleep, while theta waves emerge in drowsy periods. Similarly, alpha is often associated with relaxed wakefulness, and beta may be present during active engagement, sometimes presenting as gamma, a faster waveform of this pattern.
These patterns provide a broad framework for understanding how different states, such as rest, engagement, and cognitive demand, are expressed in real time.
Interpreting Patterns
Patterns may be evaluated across several dimensions, including:
- Activity levels within specific brain regions
- Relationships between regions
- Timing and coordination of signals
- Differences between hemispheres.
These observations are compared against normative databases of age-matched individuals, typically expressed as Z-scores. Because the data is compared to other readings across a similar population, the interpretation of the EEG is a statistical evaluation.
What QEEG Is Not
It’s important to clarify what a QEEG is not.
A QEEG does not diagnose medical or psychiatric conditions, nor does it prevent or mitigate current or future disease pathologies, read thoughts or produce structural images. A QEEG provides a functional snapshot for statistical evaluation- an objective representation of electrical activity patterns at a specific moment in time.
Why This Matters for You
Many clients arrive with a general sense of how they feel: mentally fatigued, scattered, overstimulated or simply not at their best, but without a clear reference point of why. A QEEG provides a structured way to move beyond guesswork. It offers objective, qualitative information that can help align your subjective experience with measurable patterns of specific kinds of activity. Every individual will have different perspective, but this data may help match moods and feelings to brain activity, and further an understanding of how an individual experiences clarity, rest, and mental engagement.
As a composite whole, and in the care of our trained medical personnel, this may inform a curated experience that is designed to operate in alignment with your goals, preferences, and how your system appears to be operating in real time.
A Personalized but Qualitative Experience
Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, a QEEG measures an individual’s EEG data, which may then complement other modalities. When added as part of an overall wellness plan, it contributes to a more individualized understanding of how someone is experiencing their mental state in real time.
